We focus on How to Get Healthy Hair, sharing tips to help you at home. We will provide advice from Unique Hair Design founder Emma King who has over 15 years in the hair salon business. If you want to know how to have healthy hair, this is the place to start.
Healthy Hair
With over 15 years of looking after all types of hair, we believe in the three essentials for healthy hair growth these would be:
- A healthy balanced diet.
- A scalp regime, this means taking good care of your scalp. Keep it clean and free of build-up.
- Drink Water. It is so important to stay hydrated to promote hair growth.
Balanced Diet
It is true what they say you are what you eat. Your hair is made up of the same protein as your skin, keratin. We recommend a healthy balanced diet of fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and proteins. These foods are not only important for healthy skin, but it also shows in your hair. Here is a list of our favourite foods for hair growth.
Leafy Greens – Spinach/Kale
Choose leafy greens, such as follicle-boosting spinach or kale to up the iron levels in your diet. Iron is important for a healthy strong head of hair. Iron is vital as it supports our red blood cells to carry oxygen around the body for growth and repair. It’s vital to include it in your foods for hair growth. Spinach also contains Vitamins A and C. Vitamin A helps the follicles produce sebum. Sebum moisturises the scalp and is important when thinking about how to promote hair growth. Vitamin C helps the body absorb the iron, helping you to grow healthy hair.
Apricots
Apricots, another food that comes loaded with nutrients for hair growth. Apricots contain vitamin A. Vitamin A in the body is essential for better blood circulation. Having good circulation helps the scalp to produce healthy hair. Apricots also contain vitamin C, magnesium, and iron. All these follicle friendly minerals keep your hair in good health. Who knew this small food would have so many benefits for your hair.
Avocados
Yes, avocados are not just the hip food but also are a nutritional powerhouse. So, when you are having your smashed avocado on sourdough you are in fact helping your hair. They contain potassium, magnesium, vitamins C and D, E and vitamin B6. Vitamin E plays an important role as an antioxidant, helping to reduce stress and free radicals that can impact the scalp. But there is more how you ask! Avocados are also rich in essential fatty acids. Essential fatty acids have a vital role in building our cells. Our bodies cannot produce fatty acids so it’s important to include them in our diet.
Berries
Berries may be small, but they are mighty. Berries are full of Vitamin C, as previously mentioned vitamin C helps your body absorb iron for strong hair. Vitamin C also helps your body produce collagen. Collagen is so important not just for the skin, did you know it acts as an antioxidant, helping to reduce damage to the follicles.
Oily Fish, Meat and Vegetables
Everyone researching healthy hair knows about the benefits of vitamin B12 for hair. B12 is found in dairy products, meat, and fish. B12 is also recommended for hair loss. There are also several B vitamins that help promote not just healthy hair growth but also healthy skin. Vitamin B6, for example, increases the flow of oxygenated blood to the hair follicle and scalp. Increasing blood flow helps with healthy hair growth. Vitamin B1 and Vitamin B2 also known as riboflavin help with hair growth.
Nuts and Seeds
Adding nuts and seeds to your diet is easy to do. Whether you sprinkle them on your breakfast or choose them as a healthy snack, they provide plenty of nutrients to promote hair growth. Nuts and seeds also contain fatty acids which we have mentioned above.
Eggs
Who does not love how versatile eggs are. Eggs are packed with protein. As we discussed earlier hair is made from a protein called keratin. In order for your hair to grow it needs protein. Without a regular supply of protein your hair will suffer leading it to become dry and brittle. If you are vegan, you can get your protein from nuts and other plant sources such as beans and lentils.
If you take away one thing from this blog today is if you fuel your body with the right foods, your hair and skin will benefit greatly. A healthy balanced diet will lead to a healthy shiny head of beautiful hair.
We have spoken lots about healthy foods, but it is just as important to stay hydrated, keeping your body well-hydrated is essential for a healthy scalp and hair. Dehydration can prevent hair growth.
And finally, keep your scalp and follicles free of build-up to promote hair growth. Choose a gentle, cleansing shampoo that won’t strip the oils from your hair.
